I’m a busy parent. I work full-time and run the side hustle after hours.
Here is an overview of my business:
rental properties
stock market trading
writing books
running two newsletters
To manage all of it I need to have a clear mind.
But it’s not easy in everyday life.
The trap of the to-do list
I think I am well-organized. I use task management tools, so I don’t have to remember them. I plan my weeks in advance. There is always something I can do.
But it’s also a trap. It’s easy to follow tasks and be busy. But then I have no space for fresh ideas. To do that, I have to regularly slow down offline. To give myself time to think. To get clarity.
That’s how I get new ideas
First, I need to have a clear mind. All my plans and tasks must be stored somewhere.
I use my system in Apple Reminders.
Second, I write. Writing is a great idea generator.
And writing clarifies your ideas. If you write more, you get more new ideas.
Then, stay offline regularly. This could be:
walking the dog,
jogging,
or just doing nothing in a soft chair.
Find a space where you do nothing. No podcasts, no Youtube, no reading.
This way, you give your brain the ideal environment to generate new ideas.
To me, such a space is a walk with my family. We have fun, we have a nice time together.
I don’t think about my work or task list (after all, everything is well-organized). I observe the world around me.
Whenever something pops into my head, I quickly note it down using Apple shortcuts.
